APEX

APEX needed to demonstrate what biometric personalization could look like across the passenger journey, not simply explain the concept. With four weeks before the event, AccelOne designed and built three interactive applications that worked together as a single, sequential experience, taking visitors from biometric registration to automatic recognition and a fully personalized 360° travel simulation.

The experience combined iris and facial recognition, voice control, head tracking, and immersive audio/visual technology on a privacy-first architecture. Anonymized biometric data allowed visitors to be recognized across stations without retaining personally identifiable information, making the technology both tangible and responsible.

Delivered and installed just hours before the event opened, the three applications gave airline and technology leaders a working demonstration of how biometric personalization could transform the passenger journey across multiple touchpoints.

Challenge

The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) hosts the world's largest aviation passenger experience event. It is the primary showcase for technology that improves the passenger journey, from check-in and boarding to in-flight entertainment and cabin design. More than 100 airlines, 150+ technology vendors, and thousands of industry professionals attend.

The client needed to demonstrate, not just describe, how biometric technology could personalize the passenger journey. This audience does not evaluate concepts. Airlines and vendors at APEX evaluate whether technology is real, deployable, and capable of delivering what it promises. The event date was fixed, and all three demonstration stations had to be installed and operational hours before doors opened. AccelOne had four weeks to build them.

Engineering Highlights

AccelOne's team built the three applications in sequence, one per station. Each station reused the biometric data captured by the one before it.

01

Station 1: Biometric registration.

Visitors answered a few questions about travel style and content interests. The station then captured their iris and facial data and saved everything as an anonymized profile.

02

Station 2: Biometric education.

The station recognized each visitor automatically through iris and facial recognition, with no action needed, and greeted them by name. It then showed, step by step, how iris, facial, fingerprint, and voice recognition work.

03

Station 3: 360° personalized experience.

Large screens surrounded the visitor with 3D video and surround sound, matched to their profile (beach, city, jungle, rain). Head tracking kept the content in front of the visitor, voice commands controlled volume and pause, and live translation showed how crews could talk with passengers in multiple languages.

Key Impact: Cost Reduction by Three Orders of Magnitude

One of the most significant achievements of this engagement was the reduction of AI processing costs by three orders of magnitude.

By combining on-premises transcription models with selective use of commercial APIs, AccelOne designed a hybrid architecture that:

Expanding the Partnership

As the early AI and UI initiatives gained traction, the collaboration expanded. AccelOne is now contributing not only to delivery, but to roadmap planning across AI, machine learning, and user experience initiatives.

Austin describes the ongoing dialogue as productive and forward-looking:

"As we work through these initial projects, having the teams weigh in on what the roadmap should look like next has been very productive. We've gained a great set of partners and feedback voices inside of AccelOne."

The partnership now operates at two levels:

  1. Accelerating current initiatives
  2. Accelerating current initiatives

For a platform operating at this level of complexity, that alignment matters.

A Model Built on Leverage and Trust

Monetate's goal was simple: Accelerate AI and UI initiatives without slowing the organization down.

What ultimately emerged was a partnership that increased leverage across the entire business.

Senior engineers were embedded quickly. Roadmaps moved faster. AI became part of daily workflows. Collaboration tightened across teams and time zones.

The engagement reduced friction and increased output.

And the relationship continues to expand, with AccelOne contributing to long-term direction beyond the initial delivery.

At this level of complexity, sustainable acceleration is not about adding more people. It's about embedding partners who raise the standard of how the work gets done.

Results & Impact

01
Delivered three fully functional biometric applications in four weeks, with no partial release
02
Integrated and demonstrated five technologies live: iris, facial, voice, and palm-vein recognition, plus head tracking
03
Enabled cross-station visitor recognition using anonymized iris and facial data
04
Drove the 360° personalized experience entirely from biometric preference data
05
Installed all applications on-site hours before the event opened, with on-site technical support throughout
06
Earned praise from visitors and industry professionals for the quality and potential of the demonstration

Business Impact

The demonstration replaced a slide presentation with a working system. Visitors were recognized, their preferences were recalled, and a personalized experience was delivered without friction. For an audience of airline and vendor decision-makers, that is the proof that matters.

The applications made the future passenger journey concrete: travelers recognized at each touchpoint, with preferences surfaced automatically and no documents or manual identification required. The client put biometric personalization in front of the people who decide what ends up in airlines globally, on a fixed date, with fully functional applications.

Strategic Value

The engagement shows how a privacy-first architecture makes biometric personalization viable. Anonymized records allowed recognition across stations and third-party systems without storing personally identifiable information. The same principle applies to the touchpoints the demonstration modeled: check-in, gate, boarding, and in-flight.

It also reflects how AccelOne delivers under a hard deadline: speed, precision, and creativity with limited time and resources, sequential delivery where each phase built on the last, and on-site support through the event itself.
